Time expressions

Day 3 vocabulary: Time expressions

Time expressions are words or phrases that indicate a specific time or time period. They are used in language to convey when something happened, when it will happen, or how long it will take for something to happen. Time expressions can be used in various contexts, such as in everyday conversations, in writing, in formal situations, or in scientific or technical fields.

Some of the time expressions in Japanese, including both kanji and furigana are:

1. 今日 (きょう, kyou) - today
2. 明日 (あした, ashita) - tomorrow
3. 昨日 (きのう, kinou) - yesterday
4. 一昨日 (おととい, ototoi) - day before yesterday
5. 明後日 (あさって, asatte) - day after tomorrow
6. 週間 (しゅうかん, shuukan) - week
7. 月 (つき, tsuki) - month
8. 年 (とし, toshi) - year
9. 時間 (じかん, jikan) - hour
10. 分 (ふん, fun) - minute
11. 秒 (びょう, byou) - second
12. 朝 (あさ, asa) - morning
13. 午後 (ごご, gogo) - afternoon/evening
14. 夕方 (ゆうがた, yuugata) - evening
15. 夜 (よる, yoru) - night
16. 日 (ひ, hi) - day

"Shu" (週) is the correct kanji character for "week" in Japanese, and it is the same character used in the list I provided above. The furigana reading for "shu" is "shuukan" (週間), which is the more commonly used expression for "week" in Japanese.

"Gogo" (午後) and "Yugata" (夕方) are both expressions used to refer to the afternoon or early evening in Japanese. However, they are used in different contexts and have slightly different meanings.

"Gogo" is used to refer to the time period between noon and early evening (around 6 PM), while "Yugata" is used to refer to the time period between late afternoon and evening (around 4 PM to 7 PM). So, "Gogo" is a broader expression that encompasses a larger time frame, while "Yugata" refers to a more specific time period.

Therefore, both "Gogo" and "Yugata" are correct expressions to use when referring to the afternoon or early evening in Japanese, but the context and specific time frame should be taken into consideration when choosing between the two.
